CVSC is proud to endorse past Green Tie Honoree Rep. G. Murrell Smith, Jr (R-Sumter) for District 67. He has been a conservation champion in the House with a 70% lifetime score on our Conservation Scorecard and a 63% for the last legislative session. Smith’s support of solar energy policies this past session and his fight against offshore drilling continue to show his commitment to SC.

As an avid outdoorsman and hunter, Murrell cares about our air, land and water. He has consistently supported the Conservation Bank’s mission and funding. Early in his career, he voted to let local communities adopt setbacks for factory hog operations that were more protective than state regulations. And he also opposed a budget proviso that would have tripled the nuclear waste dumped at Barnwell.

He also worked behind the scenes to protect the rights of citizens under the Pollution Control Act to force the clean-up of past, unpermitted pollution at coal ash sites, or ultimately at Pinewood.

As Chair of the Ways & Means Subcommittee that reviews the DHEC budget, Representative Smith successfully pushed to include additional funds for ongoing maintenance at Pinewood. He also pressed for funds to enable the Department to restore water quality monitoring of our lakes and rivers.
