Off-Season HOTLIST – Redistricting Update
I wanted to send you a quick update on what’s happening at the State House during the “off-season.”
Legislators are holding off (for now) on returning this fall to work on items from the sine die resolution including the authorization of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, the Savannah River Site settlement funds, and redistricting. If they set a date to return before January, we’ll keep you posted. Read more here in the Post & Courier about the House’s decision not to return.
The Senate has set a deadline of October 8, 2021 for public submission of redistricting plans. You can check out their website here.
The House of Representatives has been meeting in communities across the State and they plan to reconvene for a meeting in Columbia on October 4th. They’ve also recently added a new meeting on Tuesday, September 28, at 4:30 PM in Blatt 110 on the State House grounds to gather more virtual testimony from the public. In-person, virtual, and written testimony will be accepted. To sign up for virtual testimony, email [email protected] and specify the date (Sept 28th or Oct 4th) that you wish to testify. Written testimony should be sent to [email protected].
You can see the schedule of House redistricting meetings and stream meetings online at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/
Our partners at the League of Women Voters South Carolina are also holding an event soon to share the maps they will propose. Please join them if you can on September 29 in a virtual Zoom-based event, “What Would Fair Maps Look Like?” It is free and open to all who are interested. They will outline their process and explain their criteria and reasoning. Please register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/
As always, thank you for staying engaged!
