Positive Step for SC Prosper & Preserve
CVSC commends the members of the Labor, Commerce, & Industry Ad Hoc Subcommittee for moving forward with Concurrent Infrastructure Requirements (S.227). After thoughtful consideration, the subcommittee—chaired by Senator Tom Davis—took a positive step toward growth management by voting to move this bill to the full committee with a favorable report. CVSC is especially grateful to Senator Davis for his leadership on this issue.
In every corner of the state, South Carolina continues to face growing development pressures that threaten both our environment and quality of life. Concurrency programs, also known as adequate public facilities ordinances, ensure that local governments have the power to manage the rate of growth, protect taxpayer investment in infrastructure, and maximize land use efficiency. This tool channels growth into areas where infrastructure can accommodate it and facilitates more sustainable urban centers, while protecting South Carolina’s land and water from sprawl.
Growth is inevitable, but it should not come at the cost of the lands and waters that South Carolinians cherish so deeply. Conservation is a shared, bipartisan value in South Carolina, and we applaud these state lawmakers for placing the utmost importance on the careful stewardship of our natural resources. Please join us in thanking these legislators for advancing this enabling legislation that would add this sustainable planning tool to government toolboxes across the state.
