Across the nation, increases in energy demand as a result of large customer loads from manufacturing entities and data centers have spurred these large customers to investigate and finance the re-vitalization of nuclear plants as a way to meet this large growth while also using carbon-free energy. This bill, S.51, encourages Santee Cooper to submit a RFP to solicit proposals on utilizing V.C. Summer units 2 and 3. While utilizing private capital to finish construction of these two units removes risks to ratepayers across the State and provides additional carbon-free energy to our grid, there are still potential environmental and health and safety risks to keep in mind.
