There were several protections that were left out of last year’s energy bill that addressed energy affordability and consumer protections. With energy affordability pressure high and mounting, this bill seeks to includes safeguards that can alleviate the overall strain on the grid and protect South Carolina families and businesses from cost-shifting, reducing the unnecessary buildout of expensive power plants. This bill appropriately ensures data centers pay their fair share of electric costs and requires transparent water reporting, makes much needed advancements in energy efficiency by incentivizing utilities to save energy and lower customer bills, and protects private property rights and increases public transparency into energy projects by requiring early and standardized notification to impacted landowners along with a public comment period so that communities have an appropriate forum to voice their concerns.
