According to South Carolina’s electric utilities, data centers are estimated to account for roughly two-thirds of the state’s new energy needs. As our state’s utilities work to build significant new generation assets to meet that new demand, new safeguards will be increasingly important to prevent strain on our state’s water resources.This bill requires that a commercial data center that consumes three million or more gallons of water per month must report to DES annually, creating better transparency and ability to act to conserve our precious water systems.
