Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC) announced today the launch of GiveGreenSC which promises to change the landscape of political giving in South Carolina.
Since 2004, donors who care about protecting South Carolina’s air, land, water and health have had the option to give directly to Conservation Voters’ PAC, which in turn made contributions to endorsed candidates or financed independent mail campaigns on behalf of candidates.
Now, voters can direct their contributions to candidates through GiveGreenSC to signal that they care about conservation. It’s a win-win because Conservation Voters is acknowledged for generating the transaction and the donor is credited by the candidate for giving it.
“For too long, the South Carolina we love has been given lip service or ignored altogether by our leaders. Voters are frustrated when our natural resources are not counted as a blessing and now they can make their money talk for them,” said Ann Timberlake, Executive Director of CVSC.
GiveGreenSC is an easy, online option that allows voters to customize their donation to a “green” menu of candidates, including the CVSC PAC. Contributions to candidates are limited by law and are reported by campaigns on quarterly Ethics filings. Contributions to the CVSC PAC are unlimited and are voluntarily reported by CVSC to the Ethics Commission.
“The launch of GiveGreenSC is a signal that those elected officials who stand up for South Carolina’s natural resources will be supported. As we begin election season, the timing couldn’t be better,” said Frank Holleman, Chair of CVSC’s Political Committee.
CVSC endorsed Senator Vincent Sheheen last month at a press conference in Columbia. Sheheen’s gubernatorial campaign is featured on GiveGreenSC and additional candidates from both parties will be posted in the coming weeks.
GiveGreenSC is modeled after a similar site that was instrumental in the victory of Terry McAuliffe last year in the Virginia governor’s race.
