Honoring South Carolina’s Trails & Public Lands on National Trails Day
Wander down a winding trail and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature. Look up, and see sunlight filtering through a canopy of green leaves. Breathe in, and take in the earthy scents of leaves, flowers, and trees. Listen closely, and hear the gentle running of a nearby stream accompanied by the vibrant trill of a songbird. Keep a watchful eye, and you might glimpse the fleeting shadow of a squirrel or fluttering butterfly. These aren’t just fleeting moments – they’re the essence of what our trails offer, connecting us to the irreplaceable beauty of nature.
Every year, on the first Saturday in June, we celebrate National Trails Day, a nationwide day of advocacy and service for our public lands and trails spearheaded by the American Hiking Society. This special day focuses on encouraging outdoor recreation, raising awareness about trail preservation, and recognizing the vital role these paths play in our lives.
From boosting our physical and mental well-being to providing vital havens for local wildlife and connecting our communities, trails are so much more than just dirt paths. Our public lands and trails improve mental well-being, offering quiet moments of reprieve in nature, away from our busy, fast-paced daily lives. Trails provide a sanctuary for stress reduction, mental clarity, and a chance to disconnect from daily pressures and reconnect with yourself. They boost our physical health, acting as natural gyms and encouraging us to exercise our bodies and improve our overall fitness in the most scenic way possible. Not only this, but our trails foster a sense of community and shared appreciation for the outdoors, whether through a family stroll or a guided nature walk with fellow community members.
Beyond benefits to humans, trails play a crucial role in conservation as well. They serve as wildlife corridors, protect precious natural habitats, and offer us invaluable opportunities to learn about and appreciate the delicate ecosystems that surround us, fostering a deeper respect for the natural world in both ourselves and our children.
At CVSC, we’re dedicated to preserving and expanding access to these natural spaces. We actively advocate for vital land protection funding via the Conservation Bank and the Department of Natural Resources. We work with local communities to expand their green space funding through successful local ballot referenda, most recently in Jasper County. And we work to advance policy solutions that increase public access throughout the state, like the Trails Tax Credit that passed in 2024, which incentivizes private landowners to allow trail easements on their property. CVSC is always working to ensure all South Carolinians have the ability to enjoy our incredible trails and public lands.
