CVSC Endorses Deitra Stover Matthews for Columbia City Council

COLUMBIA, SC — CVSC announced today that it has endorsed Deitra Stover Matthews in the Columbia City Council At-Large race. The election will be held on November 2, 2021, in the City of Columbia.

“My background as an educator informed and motivated a great deal of my work in the space of conservation when I saw firsthand how environmental issues showed up in the classroom,” said Deitra Stover Matthews. “As a member of City Council, I look forward to creating a Columbia where we don’t have to choose between hugging a tree and hugging a child. I’m incredibly grateful to have earned the support of Conservation Voters of South Carolina in this election.”

CVSC Executive Director John Tynan said, “Columbia needs a leader who will advance a bold vision for the future of our city and fight for a safe and healthy environment. Through her tireless advocacy for people and the environment, Deitra Stover Matthews has shown that she is the leader that Columbia needs and deserves. I can think of no better person for CVSC’s first-ever municipal endorsement, having witnessed her passion, tenacity, and leadership as I’ve worked alongside her. She’s a formidable advocate and Columbia voters will be well-served by voting for her on November 2.”

CVSC endorses candidates for elected office based on the candidates’ background, their record and past efforts fighting for environmental protection, and their views and policy stances on conservation and the environment. This endorsement is the organization’s first-ever endorsement in a municipal election.

Stover Matthews is the Government Relations Manager for Conservation Voters of South Carolina and has worked and advocated in the space of environmental policy for more than a decade.
