CONSERVATION VOTERS OF SOUTH CAROLINA LOOKS FORWARD TO A TRANSPARENT SEARCH FOR THE NEXT DHEC DIRECTOR

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC) Executive Director Ann Timberlake issued the following statement on Eleanor Kitzman’s withdrawal from consideration for Director of DHEC:

“Conservation Voters of South Carolina looks forward to a transparent and public search to replace Catherine Templeton as the next head of the Department of Health and Environmental Control. With the withdrawal of Eleanor Kitzman, the DHEC Board has the opportunity to conduct the sort of thorough search that is necessary for our state’s public health and environmental agency.

“DHEC has a large and complex mission and touches the lives of all South Carolinians. DHEC enforces the laws that maintain the safety of our drinking water, prevent our children from being exposed to asbestos, and keep hazardous waste out of our lakes. Too much is at stake: If the DHEC leader fails, lives are on the line.

“More than 1,000 people signed the Conservation Voters of South Carolina petition asking the Senate to insist that the DHEC Board seek a qualified Director with proven management experience. We thank the Senate Medical Affairs Committee for its vigorous oversight into this appointment, and we look forward to working with DHEC in its mission of protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. ”
